Joe Baker is a partner in the General and Appellate Litigation practices of the Washington office. He is experienced in complex commercial litigation, including contractual, employment, and intellectual property disputes, antitrust and securities class actions and enforcement actions, and antitrust price fixing and merger investigations. He has authored numerous briefs and motions in federal District Courts and Courts of Appeals, and has argued before the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Joe is a member of the firm’s Electronic Discovery & Records Management practice, with a focus on cross-border data protection and ediscovery issues.

Electronic data discovery still poses numerous challenges in corporate USA. Part of the
problem is that even with the amended Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, there needs to be
another layer of guidance for organizations grappling with the complexities and unknowns of
e-discovery. To help alleviate this problem, our guest speaker, Judge Grimm, helped
develop the Maryland Protocol, a very well thought out document that provides steps and
recommendations as they pertain to litigation and electronically stored information. It was
Judge Grimm’s experience with numerous cases that led him to participate in the Maryland
Protocol. Come learn about the Maryland Protocol from the Bench perspective.

U.S. Chief Magistrate Judge Paul W. Grimm is the appointed United States Magistrate
Judge for the District Court for the District of Maryland. Grimm is a frequent speaker on e-
discovery and has written numerous books and articles on evidence, procedure and trial
practice, and is an adjunct faculty member of the University of Maryland and University of
Baltimore Schools of Law.
